After World War II of the twentieth century, the three European Communities, in order to eliminate the causes of conflicts, were established. Already, in the founding treaties there are the first elements of regional policy which was developed then in the late 60’s and 70’s. A new financing programs for regional activities were introduced and already existing programs were adjusted to the needs of regional policy. The breakthrough, however, happened when this one of the youngest policy was introduced to the Single European Acts and to the Treaty of Maastricht. As a result, in 1994, the European Committee of the Regions was created. It is an advisory body for the European Commission, the European Parliament and for the Council. The Committee of the Regions has been equipped with a solid legal basis, including the rules of procedure and the appropriate bodies. The main task of the Committee of the Regions is to develop opinions, resolutions and reports on issues related to regional or local governments. The European Committee of the Regions is a platform for discussion on important regional issues. Thanks to the activities of CoR, other bodies, such as the European Commission, can take more effective action.
