ABSTRACT
The perception of reality and reading the signs embedded in it takes place, above all, by the use of a natural language. Understanding of forms in architectonic space is greatly supported by semiotics. The 20th century achievements of the Tartu-Moscow school of semiotics and the works of Umberto Eco influenced the facilitation of communication between an object of perception and the subject. Hence a questions arises: how and by means of what tools one can read a wide array of factors shaping the image of architecture? The answer is sometimes searching for analogies between utilitarian spatial forms and painting, sculpture or music. It is worth coming back to the initial area of understanding the world, which is a natural language. It should not be surprising because we already have behind us the revolutionary breakthroughs of the 20th century in the philosophy of language, which is constantly a source of creative reflections concerning the situation of a human in the contemporary world. In order to understand the cultural issues, which currently are included in the concept of a term ‘architecture’, one may refer also to hermeneutics.
